Ingredients
Scale
Sausage Gravy
- 1½ lbs ground pork sausage
- 5 Tbsp butter
- ¼ cup all-purpose flour
- 3 cups milk
- 1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- ¾ tsp salt
- ½ tsp pepper
Biscuit Layers
- 1 (16-oz) can refrigerated Grands! biscuits
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
Instructions
- Preheat Oven and Prepare Pan: Preheat your oven to 350ºF. Lightly spray a 9×13-inch baking pan with cooking spray to prevent sticking.
- Cook Sausage: In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook the ground pork sausage until it is crumbly and no longer pink. Remove the cooked sausage and drain the excess grease.
- Make the Gravy: In the same skillet, melt the butter. Whisk in the flour and cook, whisking constantly, for one minute to create a roux. Gradually whisk in the milk, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Bring to a boil while whisking constantly and cook until the gravy thickens, about 2 to 3 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in the cooked sausage.
- Prepare Biscuit Pieces: Cut each biscuit in the refrigerated can into 6 pieces.
- Layer the Dish: Place half of the biscuit pieces in the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Spoon half of the sausage gravy over the biscuits, then sprinkle with half of the shredded cheddar cheese.
- Add Remaining Layers: Top the cheese layer with the remaining biscuit pieces. Spread the remaining sausage gravy over the biscuits and finish with the remaining shredded cheddar cheese.
- Bake: Bake uncovered in the preheated oven for 30 to 35 minutes until the top is golden brown and the casserole is bubbly.
Notes
- For extra flavor, consider adding a pinch of crushed red pepper to the gravy.
- Use whole milk for a rich, creamy gravy; low-fat milk may alter the texture.
- Leftovers can be refrigerated and reheated; the biscuits will absorb more gravy over time.
- This dish pairs well with fresh fruit or a simple green salad for a complete meal.
