Ingredients
Scale
Cake
- 1 box yellow cake mix
- Ingredients listed on the cake mix box (usually eggs, oil, water)
Pudding
- 2 (3.4 oz) boxes vanilla pudding mix
- Ingredients listed on the pudding mix boxes (usually cold milk)
Frosting
- 1 (16 oz) tub chocolate frosting
Instructions
- Prepare the Cake: Preheat your oven according to the package instructions. Prepare the yellow cake mix as directed for a 9×13-inch pan, including all required ingredients such as eggs, oil, and water. Bake the cake as directed on the box. Once baked, allow the cake to fully cool.
- Poke Holes in the Cake: After the cake has cooled, use a straw or the handle of a wooden spoon to poke holes evenly throughout the cake’s surface. Make sure holes reach about two-thirds of the cake’s depth to let the pudding soak in properly.
- Prepare the Pudding: Follow the package instructions to make the vanilla pudding using the required amount of cold milk. Whisk until the pudding is smooth, slightly thickened, yet still pourable.
- Add Pudding to Cake: Spoon the prepared pudding evenly over the cake, gently pressing down with a spatula to help the pudding seep deep into the poke holes. Spread the remaining pudding evenly over the entire top layer of the cake.
- Chill the Cake: Cover the cake with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, though overnight chilling is preferred to allow the pudding to fully absorb into the cake.
- Frost the Cake: Warm the tub of chocolate frosting in the microwave for 30–60 seconds until it’s smooth and easy to spread. Pour the frosting evenly over the chilled pudding layer and use a spatula to smooth the surface.
- Set and Serve: Refrigerate the finished cake for at least another 30 minutes to let the chocolate frosting set. Slice into squares and serve chilled for the best flavor and texture.
Notes
- Using a straw or wooden spoon handle to poke holes is essential to allow the pudding to seep into the cake for moistness.
- Chilling the cake overnight enhances the flavor melding.
- Warming the frosting makes it easier to spread smoothly over the pudding layer.
- This cake is best served chilled for a refreshing dessert experience.
- If desired, you can use homemade vanilla pudding and chocolate ganache instead of boxed mixes for a homemade touch.
