Ingredients
Scale
Dry Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
Wet Ingredients
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cut into small pieces
- 3/4 cup buttermilk
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt to evenly distribute the leavening agents and seasoning.
- Cut in Butter: Add the cold, cubed butter to the flour mixture. Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to work the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs with pea-sized butter pieces visible.
- Add Buttermilk: Create a well in the center of the flour mixture and pour in the buttermilk. Gently stir with a fork or wooden spoon just until the dough comes together, being careful not to overmix to keep the dough tender and flaky.
- Form Dough: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and pat it into a rectangle about 1/2-inch thick.
- Fold for Layers: Fold the dough in half and pat it down again to 1/2-inch thickness. Repeat the folding and patting 2-3 more times to build flaky layers in the biscuits.
- Cut Biscuits: Use a floured biscuit cutter or sharp knife to cut out rounds or squares. Place the biscuits about 1 inch apart on the prepared baking sheet.
- Bake: Bake the biscuits in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes or until golden brown on top and cooked through.
- Cool and Serve: Remove the biscuits from the oven and let them cool on a wire rack for a few minutes. Serve warm for best flavor and texture.
Notes
- Ensure the butter is very cold to achieve flaky layers.
- Do not overmix the dough to avoid tough biscuits.
- Folding the dough helps create light, flaky layers typical of classic biscuits.
- Serve biscuits warm with butter, honey, or your favorite jam.
- You can substitute buttermilk with milk mixed with a tablespoon of lemon juice if needed.
