Scale
Main Ingredients
- 1 cup pumpkin purée (unsweetened)
- ½ cup finely grated carrot
- 2 ½ cups whole wheat flour
- 1 egg
- ¼ cup rolled oats
- 1 tablespoon flaxseed meal (optional)
- Water as needed for consistency
Instructions
- Preheat the oven: Set your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
- Mix wet ingredients: In a large bowl, combine pumpkin purée, grated carrot, egg, rolled oats, and flaxseed meal if using. Stir until fully incorporated.
- Add flour: Gradually stir in the whole wheat flour until a stiff dough forms. If the dough feels too dry or crumbly, add water one tablespoon at a time until the dough becomes workable but not sticky.
- Roll out dough: Lightly flour a clean surface and roll the dough out to approximately ¼-inch thickness, ensuring even thickness for uniform baking.
- Cut dough shapes: Use a small bone-shaped cookie cutter or simply cut into bite-sized pieces suitable for dogs.
- Bake the chews: Place the cut shapes on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them evenly. Bake for 25–30 minutes or until the chews are firm to the touch and golden brown.
- Cool completely: Remove from the oven and let the treats cool thoroughly before offering to your dog to ensure they harden properly and are safe to eat.
Notes
- Store the treats in an airtight container for up to one week to maintain freshness.
- For longer storage, freeze the chews and thaw portions as needed.
- Always use plain unsweetened pumpkin purée, not pumpkin pie filling which contains added sugars and spices that are harmful to dogs.
- For a wheat-free version, substitute whole wheat flour with rice flour or oat flour.
