Description

Delicious and healthy homemade Carrot & Pumpkin Chews for Dogs, made with wholesome ingredients like pumpkin purée, grated carrot, and whole wheat flour. These treats are perfect for rewarding your furry friend with a natural snack free from artificial additives.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 cup pumpkin purée (unsweetened)
  • ½ cup finely grated carrot
  • 2 ½ cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 egg
  • ¼ cup rolled oats
  • 1 tablespoon flaxseed meal (optional)
  • Water as needed for consistency

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Set your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
  2. Mix wet ingredients: In a large bowl, combine pumpkin purée, grated carrot, egg, rolled oats, and flaxseed meal if using. Stir until fully incorporated.
  3. Add flour: Gradually stir in the whole wheat flour until a stiff dough forms. If the dough feels too dry or crumbly, add water one tablespoon at a time until the dough becomes workable but not sticky.
  4. Roll out dough: Lightly flour a clean surface and roll the dough out to approximately ¼-inch thickness, ensuring even thickness for uniform baking.
  5. Cut dough shapes: Use a small bone-shaped cookie cutter or simply cut into bite-sized pieces suitable for dogs.
  6. Bake the chews: Place the cut shapes on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them evenly. Bake for 25–30 minutes or until the chews are firm to the touch and golden brown.
  7. Cool completely: Remove from the oven and let the treats cool thoroughly before offering to your dog to ensure they harden properly and are safe to eat.

Notes

  • Store the treats in an airtight container for up to one week to maintain freshness.
  • For longer storage, freeze the chews and thaw portions as needed.
  • Always use plain unsweetened pumpkin purée, not pumpkin pie filling which contains added sugars and spices that are harmful to dogs.
  • For a wheat-free version, substitute whole wheat flour with rice flour or oat flour.
