Description

Cheddar Bay Biscuits and Gravy Casserole is a comforting Southern-inspired dish combining savory sausage gravy topped with fluffy, flavorful cheddar bay biscuits. This hearty casserole offers a delicious twist on classic biscuits and gravy by layering the sausage gravy in a baking dish and topping it with cheesy biscuit dough baked to golden perfection. It’s perfect for brunch, family dinners, or potlucks and serves 8 generously.

Ingredients

Scale

Sausage Gravy

  • 1½ lbs ground pork sausage
  • 5 Tbsp butter
  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • 3 cups milk
  • 1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce (optional)
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp onion powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Biscuit Topping

  • 1 (11.36-oz) package Red Lobster Cheddar Bay Biscuit mix
  • ¾ cup water
  • ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • ¼ cup melted butter
  • Seasoning packet from the biscuit mix
  • Dried parsley for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven and Prepare the Pan: Preheat your oven to 425ºF. Lightly spray a 9×13-inch baking pan with cooking spray to ensure the casserole doesn’t stick and bakes evenly.
  2. Cook the Sausage: In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook the ground pork sausage until it is browned and crumbly, with no pink remaining. Remove from heat and drain excess fat to keep the dish from being greasy.
  3. Make the Gravy: In the same skillet, melt 5 tablespoons of butter. Whisk in ¼ cup of all-purpose flour and cook constantly for one minute to form a roux. Gradually whisk in 3 cups of milk, 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce, ½ teaspoon garlic powder, ½ teaspoon onion powder, plus salt and pepper to taste. Bring the mixture to a boil while whisking constantly until it thickens, about 2 to 3 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in the cooked sausage.
  4. Assemble the Base Layer: Pour the sausage gravy mixture into the prepared 9×13-inch pan. Spread it out evenly.
  5. Initial Bake: Bake the gravy layer uncovered in the preheated oven for 15 minutes. This sets the base before adding the biscuit topping.
  6. Prepare the Biscuit Dough: While the gravy is baking, prepare the biscuit dough according to package directions by mixing the cheddar bay biscuit mix with ¾ cup water and ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese until combined.
  7. Add Biscuit Topping: Using a medium cookie scoop or spoon, drop biscuit dough evenly over the baked sausage gravy in the casserole dish, covering the surface.
  8. Bake Until Golden: Return the casserole to the oven and bake for an additional 15 to 18 minutes, or until the biscuits are puffed up and golden brown on top.
  9. Prepare Garlic Butter and Finish: Combine the ¼ cup melted butter with the seasoning packet from the biscuit mix. Brush this garlic butter generously over the hot biscuits and sprinkle with dried parsley for added flavor and a beautiful finish.

Notes

  • Try not to overcrowd the biscuit topping; leaving small gaps allows even cooking and a nice golden crust.
  • For a bit of extra flavor, you can add a pinch of cayenne pepper or smoked paprika to the gravy.
  • If you prefer a leaner version, substitute ground turkey sausage instead of pork sausage.
  • Leftover casserole can be refrigerated for up to 3 days and reheated in a microwave or oven.
  • This dish pairs well with a simple green salad or steamed vegetables for a balanced meal.
