Scale
Dry Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
Butter and Dairy
- 1/3 cup butter or shortening (cold)
- 1 cup milk or buttermilk
- 2 tablespoons butter, melted (for garlic butter topping)
Cheese and Seasoning
- 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder (for garlic butter)
- 1 teaspoon dried parsley (for garlic butter)
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or use an ungreased baking sheet to prevent sticking.
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 cups all-purpose flour, 1 tablespoon baking powder, 1 tablespoon granulated sugar, 1 teaspoon garlic powder, and 1 teaspoon salt. Stir together until evenly mixed.
- Incorporate Butter/Shortening: Grate 1/3 cup cold butter using a box grater or cut it into small pieces and use a pastry cutter to blend it into the flour mixture. Continue until the mixture resembles coarse meal or sand.
- Add Milk/Buttermilk: Slowly pour in 1 cup milk or buttermilk while stirring gently until the dough just begins to come together. Take care not to overmix to keep the biscuits tender.
- Fold in Cheese: Gently fold in 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese until evenly distributed throughout the dough.
- Form Biscuits: Using a large spoon or ice cream scoop, portion out the dough into 12 even mounds on the prepared baking sheet. Space them about 1 inch apart. Precise shaping isn’t necessary.
- Bake Biscuits: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 10–12 minutes or until the biscuits turn lightly golden on top.
- Prepare Garlic Butter: While the biscuits bake, melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a small bowl in the microwave in 15-second increments. Stir in 1 teaspoon garlic powder and 1 teaspoon dried parsley to create the garlic butter topping.
- Brush with Garlic Butter: Once the biscuits are baked, remove them from the oven and immediately brush the tops generously with the prepared garlic butter mixture for that signature flavor.
Notes
- Using buttermilk instead of milk enhances flavor and tenderness.
- Grating cold butter helps to create a flaky texture in the biscuits.
- Don’t overmix the dough to avoid tough biscuits.
- The garlic butter topping can be adjusted or omitted for less garlic flavor.
- Serve warm for best taste and texture.
