Ingredients
Scale
Beef Marinade
- 1 lb beef (flank steak or sirloin), thinly sliced
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 1 tablespoon cooking wine (optional)
Sauce
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
- 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- ¼ cup water or beef broth
Stir Fry
- 1 large onion, sliced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, minced
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil (or vegetable oil)
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 2 green onions, chopped (for garnish)
- Cooked rice or noodles (for serving)
Instructions
- Marinate the Beef: In a bowl, combine the thinly sliced beef with 1 tablespoon soy sauce, 1 tablespoon oyster sauce, cornstarch, and cooking wine (if using). Mix well and let it marinate for at least 10-15 minutes to tenderize and flavor the beef.
- Prepare the Stir Fry Sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together the remaining soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, sugar, and water or beef broth. Set this sauce aside to be added later.
- Cook the Beef: Heat a wok or large skillet over medium-high heat. Add sesame oil and swirl to coat the surface. Once hot, add the marinated beef in a single layer and stir-fry for 2-3 minutes until the beef is just browned but not fully cooked through. Remove the beef from the pan and set it aside.
- Stir Fry the Onions: In the same pan, add a little more oil if needed. Add the sliced onions and stir-fry for 3-4 minutes until they soften and start to caramelize. Then add the minced garlic and ginger and stir-fry for about 1 minute until fragrant.
- Combine and Sauce: Return the cooked beef to the pan with the onions. Pour in the prepared stir-fry sauce and sprinkle black pepper over the mixture. Stir everything together well to coat the beef and onions evenly with the sauce. Let it simmer for 2-3 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly and the beef is cooked through.
- Serve: Garnish the stir fry with chopped green onions and serve immediately over steamed rice or noodles for a satisfying meal.
Notes
- For best results, slice beef against the grain for maximum tenderness.
- Cooking wine is optional but adds a nice depth of flavor.
- Adjust the amount of sugar in the sauce to suit your taste preference.
- Use a wok or large skillet for even high-heat cooking.
- If you prefer spicier flavors, add chili flakes or fresh sliced chilies during the onion stir-fry step.
- Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.
