Ingredients
Scale
Onion Fritters
- 2 large onions, thinly sliced
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon paprika
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 cup buttermilk
- 1 large egg
- Vegetable oil for frying
Instructions
- Heat the oil. Heat vegetable oil in a deep skillet or pot over medium heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C), preparing it for frying the fritters.
- Prepare the onions. Thinly slice the onions and separate them into individual rings. Place these in a large bowl and set aside.
- Mix dry ingredients. In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, black pepper, paprika, and garlic powder until well combined.
- Combine wet ingredients. In a small bowl, whisk the buttermilk and egg together to create the wet mixture.
- Create the batter. Pour the wet mixture into the bowl with the dry ingredients and mix thoroughly to form a thick, consistent batter.
- Coat the onion rings. Add the separated onion rings into the batter, gently tossing to ensure each ring is evenly coated.
- Fry the fritters. Carefully drop spoonfuls of the battered onion rings into the hot oil, frying in batches. Cook each batch for 3-4 minutes until the fritters are golden brown and crispy.
- Drain and serve. Remove the fritters from the oil using a slotted spoon and place them on paper towels to drain excess oil. Serve hot with your choice of dipping sauce such as ranch, ketchup, or honey mustard.
Notes
- Ensure the oil reaches the correct temperature (350°F / 175°C) to get crispy fritters without absorbing too much oil.
- Fry in small batches to avoid overcrowding the skillet, which can lower the oil temperature and lead to soggy fritters.
- Thinly slicing the onions helps them cook evenly and blend well with the batter.
- Feel free to customize the seasoning in the batter by adding cayenne pepper or herbs for additional flavor.
- Serve immediately for the best crispy texture; fritters may lose crispiness if left to sit too long.
