Ingredients

Scale

Batter Ingredients

  • 2 cups of milk
  • 1 egg
  • 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract
  • 6 tablespoons of butter, melted
  • 2 cups of all-purpose flour
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 teaspoon of baking soda
  • 2 tablespoons of sugar

For Frying and Serving

  • Vegetable oil (for frying, about half inch deep)
  • Powdered sugar (for serving)
  • Whipped cream or fruit (optional, for topping)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the batter: In a medium-sized bowl, combine the milk, egg, vanilla extract, and melted butter. Mix thoroughly to combine.
  2. Add dry ingredients: Stir in the pinch of salt, baking soda, and sugar until well incorporated.
  3. Add flour: Gradually fold in the all-purpose flour until the batter is smooth and consistent without lumps.
  4. Prepare for piping: Transfer the batter to a gallon-sized Ziplock bag and set it aside for a few minutes to rest.
  5. Heat the oil: Pour vegetable oil into a frying pan to a depth of about half an inch. Heat the oil on high for 2 minutes, then reduce to medium heat.
  6. Test the oil temperature: Drop a small bit of batter into the oil; if bubbles form around the edges immediately, the oil is ready. Adjust heat slightly if needed.
  7. Fry the funnel cake bites: Cut a small hole in the bottom corner of the Ziplock bag and carefully drizzle the batter into 1 to 2 small circles in the hot oil.
  8. Cook each side: Fry until the underside is golden brown, then gently flip with a slotted spatula and cook the other side until golden brown as well.
  9. Drain excess oil: Remove the bites and place them on paper towels to absorb excess grease.
  10. Serve: Sprinkle with powdered sugar and serve warm with optional whipped cream or fresh fruit toppings.

Notes

  • Make sure the oil temperature is medium to avoid burning while ensuring the interior cooks properly.
  • The Ziplock bag method makes piping the batter easy and creates consistent shapes.
  • Serve immediately for best taste and texture, as funnel cake bites are crispiest warm.
  • Use fresh whipped cream or seasonal fruit like berries or peaches for delicious toppings.
  • Be cautious when frying to avoid oil splatters and burns.
