Description

A flavorful and vibrant garlic turmeric rice recipe that combines aromatic spices with tender rice, perfect as a nutritious and colorful side dish for any meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Rice and Liquid

  • 1 cup long-grain white rice (such as basmati or jasmine)
  • 2 cups water or low-sodium chicken broth

Seasonings and Flavorings

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil or butter
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Optional Garnish

  • Chopped fresh parsley or cilantro

Instructions

  1. Rinse the Rice: Rinse the rice under cold water until the water runs clear to remove excess starch, then drain well to prevent clumping while cooking.
  2. Sauté Garlic: Heat olive oil or butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat, add the minced garlic, and sauté for 1–2 minutes until fragrant but not browned to release its flavor.
  3. Add Spices and Rice: Stir in the turmeric, salt, and black pepper, followed by the rinsed rice; cook for 1–2 minutes, stirring frequently to coat the rice evenly with the spices.
  4. Cook the Rice: Add the water or broth and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer gently for 15–18 minutes until the liquid is fully absorbed and the rice is tender.
  5. Rest and Fluff: Remove the saucepan from heat and let the rice sit, covered, for 5 minutes to steam and become fluffy. Fluff the rice with a fork before serving.
  6. Garnish: Optionally, sprinkle chopped fresh parsley or cilantro over the top for a burst of color and freshness.

Notes

  • You can substitute brown rice, but be sure to increase the cooking time and the amount of liquid accordingly, as brown rice requires longer cooking.
  • For additional flavor, stir in a squeeze of fresh lemon juice or add a handful of peas just before serving to brighten the dish.
