This Korean Chinese Shrimp Toast recipe features crispy fried bread topped with a savory and spicy shrimp mixture seasoned with gochujang, sesame oil, and aromatic spices. Perfect as an appetizer or snack, these golden toasts are garnished with sesame seeds and green onions for an irresistible flavor bomb that’s quick and easy to make.

Ingredients

Scale

Bread and Shrimp Mixture

  • 8 slices white bread (crusts removed)
  • 1/2 lb (225g) large shrimp, peeled, deveined, and chopped
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon gochujang (Korean chili paste)
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 2 teaspoons soy sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon ginger powder
  • 1 tablespoon fresh cilantro, chopped (optional)

Coating

  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs

For Frying and Garnish

  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • Sesame seeds, for garnish
  • Chopped green onions, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Prepare the shrimp mixture: Chop the shrimp into small pieces and place them in a medium bowl.
  2. Mix the seasoning: Add mayonnaise, gochujang, sesame oil, soy sauce, garlic powder, and ginger powder to the shrimp. Stir well until the mixture is thick and paste-like. For a smoother texture, pulse briefly in a food processor.
  3. Spread the shrimp topping: Coat each slice of bread evenly with a thin layer of the shrimp mixture using the back of a spoon.
  4. Dip in egg: Dip each slice shrimp-side down into the beaten egg to help the coating stick.
  5. Coat with panko: Press the shrimp side into panko breadcrumbs, ensuring an even, firm coating.
  6. Fry the toast: Heat 1/2 inch vegetable oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Fry toast shrimp-side down for 2-3 minutes until golden and crispy. Flip and cook the other side for another 2-3 minutes until crispy and golden brown.
  7. Drain excess oil: Remove the toast from the pan and place on paper towels to absorb excess oil.
  8. Garnish and serve: Cut each slice into triangles or squares. Garnish with sesame seeds, chopped green onions, and optional fresh cilantro.
  9. Enjoy immediately: Serve with dipping sauces like soy sauce or sweet chili sauce for the best flavor experience.

Notes

  • To achieve a smoother shrimp mixture, pulse briefly in a food processor before spreading.
  • If you prefer less spice, reduce the amount of gochujang or omit it.
  • Be careful when frying to avoid overcrowding the pan to maintain even crisping.
  • The shrimp toast is best enjoyed fresh to keep the bread crispy.
  • For a gluten-free version, substitute bread and panko breadcrumbs with gluten-free alternatives.
